A children’s playpark in Creggan has been vandalised with graffiti.
Sinn Féin Councillor Kevin Campbell condemned the ongoing attacks on the park which had been daubed with the words ‘PSNI/ RUC out.’
He said: “It is disgraceful the Bishop Field play park has been repeatedly targeted in graffiti attacks. Despite the best efforts of the Triax Neighbourhood Management Team to remove this graffiti, which they have done at least four times in the last two months, it is obvious that there are those intent on ghettoising the park and the greater Creggan area.
“This park was hard fought for. It cost more than £1,000,000 and it is used day and daily by children, parents and grandparents.
“I am proud to have helped secure this park for the people of Creggan and I am determined that they should be free to use it without having to run the gauntlet of graffiti, which is absolutely terrible looking ”
Colr Campbell continued: “I am appealing to those who are painting this graffiti, and to anyone who has influence with them, to give the park and the children of Creggan a break. If people feel they have a point to make, I’m sure we can as a community find a better way of doing it than painting a children’s play park. Having spoken to the residents living around the park i am 100% convinced there is little support for these attacks and i am calling on those responsible to stop.”
Cllr Campbell concluded: “For years we campaigned to establish a first rate Creggan play park. Now we have it we cannot allow it to be attacked or destroyed.”
