Sinn Fein Councillor Patricia Logue was speaking as she welcomed moves to develop tourism at the historic cemetery. “I think it would be remiss of us if we miss the plots, the unmarked graves of people who were in the care of religious organisations, both children and adults,” Colr. Logue said. “I also know of 2,000 children who were stillborn or died shortly after birth and buried in unconsecrated ground.”

She said that she was aware this last matter had been redressed, but that this history should be included in the history of the cemetery.

SDLP Councillor John Boyle said: “The history of the City Cemetery is the history of our city.

“Many people buried there have contributed very positively to our city.”
