The City of Derry Guitar Festival, which will take place in the grounds of the University of Ulster Magee Campus from August 26-28, will give you the opportunity to hear some of the top international guitarists of our time, crossing the genres of classical, acoustic and flamenco guitar.

This year’s festival will start with a showcase of local talent as artistic director Sean Woods and flautist Sarah Murphy will take the stage for a lunchtime recital on Friday, August 26, at 1.15pm.

Considered to be one of the leading lights on the Irish guitar scene, Sean Woods holds a Master of Music Degree from the University of Ulster and has given performances in the UK, Austria and Italy, as a soloist or playing with the likes of Carlos Bonell and Margarita Escarpa.

As well as touring with Festive Flutes, Sarah Murphy works regularly with the Ulster Orchestra and gives duo recitals and BBC broadcasts with pianist Ruth McGinley.

Making a welcome return will be Carlos Bonell, who will be performing for the first time ever with ConTempo String Quartet, from Galway, and presenting the world premiere of a new piece for string quintet composed by Dr Laurence Roman. Other performances will include solo concerts by Gabriel Guillen and Matthew McAllister. All concerts will take place in the Great Hall, Magee Campus.

Concert tickets cost £12, £8 concession and £5 for students. Lunchtime concerts £7, £ 5 concession and £3 students. For bookings please call: 71. 311288. Courses will also be running throughout the weekend.
