News of a £800,000 facelift for Creggan’s ‘Corned Beef Tin’ has been welcomed by SDLP Councillor Jim Clifford.

Funding for the building, which earned its nickname thanks to its unusual shape, will come from DSD and Derry City Council.

Currently the building houses projects run by the Creggan Neighbourhood Partnership. This week Derry City Council issued a tender for the refurbishment of the building. Colr. Clifford said the plans for the building were “impressive” and needed to be welcomed.

“The Corned Beef Tin is an invaluable resource to the people of Creggan and has been for almost 40 years. The new plans will see the building given a whole new lease of life and allow it to continue to be a great resource for years to come. I want to praise Derry City Council and Alex Attwood’s office at the Department of Social Development for making the funding available for this project.”

Work on the refurbishment of the building is expected to start later this year.
