'˜Community in shock' after '˜tragic' Derry road death

Derry is in 'shock' after a man died following a road traffic collision on the Clooney Road on Sunday.

SDLP MLA for Foyle, Mark H. Durkan described the incident as “tragic”.

“It is with great sadness that I have learned of the death of a local man on the Clooney Road. The tragic accident happened just after midnight between the Maydown and Gransha roundabouts when the deceased was involved in a collision with another car,” said Mr. Durkan.

“My thoughts and the thoughts of all my SDLP colleagues in Derry, are with the friends and family of this man and indeed with the friends and families of those injured in this accident. I travel this stretch of road everyday and know just how dangerous this junction can be.

“I believe the occupants of the other car have suffered significant injuries which thankfully are non-life threatening. It is of course a traumatic experience for all involved and I sincerely hope they make a quick and thorough recovery,” he added.

Sinn Fein Councillor for the area, Paul Fleming, said any road death was “one too many”.

“The local community is in shock following the news of the death of a man on the Clooney Road this morning,” said Colr. Fleming.

“Any death on our roads is one too many and a tragedy for all those involved.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who has died at this difficult and sad time and those injured in this accident,” he added.

The man, in his 40s, died following a two vehicle road traffic collision on the Clooney Road at 12.50am.

A man and woman, both aged in her 50s, were taken to hospital where they were their injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening, were treated.

Inspector Smyth said: “The road traffic collision involved a silver Ford Ka and a grey Peugeot 308. I would ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the cars in the area to contact Strand Road Police Station or the Collision Investigation Unit on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 70 of 04/09/16.”

The Clooney Road has no re-opened to traffic.
