A man is still being questioned by police after a 19 year-old woman diedin Altnagelvin Hospital yesterday.

Residents living in Cromore Gardens in Creggan said they were stunned when they woke up to the news that a 19 year-old woman had died as a result of an incident in a flat in the area.

According to police, the girl had been in a nightclub in the city centre with friends. It is believed she left the nightclub in a taxi at around 1am.

“I am completely shocked. This such a quiet street. I feel so sorry for the girl’s family,” said one female resident who asked not to be named.

According to Journal sources an ambulance was called to a flat in Cromore Gardens after 2am on Thursday. It is believed that the 19 year-old woman was rushed to Altnagelvin Hospital but died later.

Local Sinn Fein councillor, Kevin Campbell, was in direct contact with the girl’s family yesterday evening.

“I have spoken to the girl’s uncle and as you would expect the family are devastated.

“The girl was only 19, she was from Portaferry and was in Derry studying to be a nurse at Magee, she had her whole life in front of her - this is so tragic.”

At the time of going to print last night police were unable to say whether the woman had died as a result of an accident or foul play.

“The investigation is still ongoing so I would ask people to let the police get on with what they have to do.

“I can’t even begin to imagine what this must be like for the girl’s family. I told her uncle that the thoughts and prayers of the entire Creggan community are with them at this time,” said Colr. Campbell.

A 21 year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident. It is believed that the scene will remain cordoned off until detectives investigating the death receive the results of the girl’s post-mortem.
