The community in Malin was today said to be devastated after the death of a young father in a road traffic collision last night.

The man in his 30s died following a road traffic collision, which occurred at Strand Head on the main Carndonagh to Malin Road at 6pm on Monday.

Gardai in Buncrana are currently investigating the crash.

A spokesman confirmed that the man who died was the sole occupant and was fatally injured when the car he was driving collided with another vehicle.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital.

The driver of the second vehicle, also in his 30s, was uninjured.

Sinn Fein Councillor Albert Doherty said local community was devastated.

He said: “We are just shocked to the core. Again we have lost a young life, a young family man from a very well respected and extensive family circle here in the Malin area.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family, mum and dad and siblings.”

This stretch of road from McSheffrey’s Bridge to Malin Town remained closed this morning to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigations and local diversions are in place.

Gardai meanwhile have appealed for witnesses, anyone with information or to anyone who travelled this road between 5.45pm and 6.15pm on MOnday to contact Buncrana Garda Station on 074 - 9320540, The Garda Confidential telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
