The incident occurred at a derelict property in the Bells Hill area of the town on August 4.

SDLP Assemblyman Mullan said: “This is shocking news because Bells Hill is a quiet residential area of Limavady. I hope there was nothing sinister behind this. I urge anyone with information to give it to the police, so that whoever is responsible is caught.”

A Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) received a call at 8:08pm to a report of a fire at derelict premises at the Bells Hill area of Limavady on Thursday, 4th August.

“One Fire Appliance each from Limavady, Coleraine and Dungiven Fire Stations were deployed to the scene. Firefighters using a hose reel jet, a covering jet, thermal imaging cameras and breathing apparatus dealt with a ground floor fire at a two-storey derelict house in the area. Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service finished at the scene at 9:40pm and the fire is being treated as deliberate.”

The PSNI have appealed to anyone with any information about the arson to contact Limavady Police Station on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1151 of 04/08/16 or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
