Gardening season is upon us once again and Older People North West/Age Concern Derry is launching its annual gardening competition!
Are you over 60, live within Derry City Council area and have a garden, vegetable plot or hanging basket that you are really proud of and have put a lot of effort into cultivating? If so, you could win the Older People North West/ Age Concern Derry Perpetual Challenge Cup by entering the 2012 Annual Gardening Competition.
A spokesperson for the charity said: “This annual competition is an opportunity for older people who are keen gardeners to get the recognition they deserve for their efforts and to demonstrate their talents to a wider audience. We would like to see as many people as possible getting involved in this year’s gardening competition, whether you’ve got a huge garden with a rolling lawn and endless flower beds or just a small square of grass, a hanging basket or window box, you can enter the competition. The competition has various categories so you are bound to fit into one of the categories or will know somebody who does”.
The competition is sponsored by Homebase, Crescent Link and prizes will include gift vouchers to spend in store in addition to spot prizes at the awards evening. Gardeners can enter any of the four categories which are; best gardens, window boxes and hanging baskets, vegetable plots, enclosed yards or patio gardens. It doesn’t matter how big or small your garden is, all entries are welcome. Points are awarded for maintenance, variety, colour and overall impression.
The closing date for entries is Thursday, June 28. Gardens will be judged in July by City of Derry and District Horticulture Society judges.
If you know an older person whose garden fits into any of the competition categories please encourage them to enter or if they are too shy about coming forward why not put in an entry for them.
Further details and entry forms can be obtained from Age Concern Derry, Malvern House, Chapel Road, or telephone: 71347478.
