Council looking into Poppy Exhibition for Derry

Derry & Strabane Council have been tasked to look into the possibility of staging part of the Tower of London's famous Ceramic Poppy Installation in the city.

UUP Councillor, Derek Hussey, suggested council officers carry out a scoping exercise while expressing an interest, without committal, to the organisation involving running the touring exhibitions by the deadline yesterday. He made the call at the recent full Council meeting.

Speaking yesterday, Colr. Hussey said Derry had a number of key sites which met the criteria of having some relevance to WW1, including the former army base at Ebrington, the Cenotaph, St Columb’s Cathedral and the Guildhall. Colr. Hussey said: “Hundreds of thousands of people have already visited the two touring exhibitions at locations across England and given the Decade of Commemorations, I would anticipate that if this is successful it could bring many visitors to the city and region and thereby bring economic benefit for the area.”

The ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ installation at the Tower marked 100 years since Britain became involvement in WW1.
