In a report to the council’s Health and Community Committee last week, directorate head Karen McFarland, reported how ten council premises launched as new ‘Breastfeeding Welcome Here’ sites in January.

The Western Trust’s Health Improvement Department has since conducted assessments of six of the sites - The Guildhall, Tower Museum, District Registration Offices, Foyle Arena, Templemore Sports Complex and Riversdale Leisure Centre.

“I am pleased to advise that during these assessments staff have been found to be ‘extremely positive and supportive of this initiative’ and that no major concerns or issues have been highlighted,” reported Ms McFarland.

Sinn Féin Councillor Karina Carlin welcomed the update noting how: “Recent reports in the press highlight how under attack some women can feel when breast feeding in public”.
