The finishing touches are now being added to the new superstore site off Strand Road.

The £6m project has seen the former Budget DIY building, which had been vacant for over a decade, transformed.

Works have also been completed to the car park in front of the complex, with additional new parking to the side of the Pennyburn site, which is shared with Harry Corry’s.

Ahead of the March 18th opening, the company has been recruiting for staff, with around 100 jobs expected to be created when it opens to the public.

Planning permission for the site to be developed for the “sale of convenience and comparison goods” was granted to Home Bargains T. J. Morris back in March, 2016. Associated works included the demolition of former Xtra Vision unit at the other end of the complex.

A representative from T.J. Morris Ltd. told the council previously that the plans involved a flagship Home Bargains outlet that would create 100 jobs.

The representative also said it would enhance competitive retail environment in conjunction with increasing local rates revenue.

Budget DIY closed its doors back in 2006 and the large corner store has remained vacant ever since.

The opening of Home Bargains will herald a string of new superstores planned for Derry.

The Range recently announced plans to take over the former B&Q site off Buncrana Road. The plans will see the creation of a further 80 jobs.

Plans have also been approved for a major retail store at Crescent Link.

Home Bargains Limited is one of the UK’s leading discount retail chains, with over 400 stores located across Britain.
