Couple remanded in custody on terrorism charges

A DERRY couple charged with a number of offences under terrorism legislation, including possession of explosives, have been remanded in custody following a special sitting of Derry’s Magistrates Court.

Kevin Barry Concannon and his wife Lesley Concannon, a Zumba teacher originally from West Virginia, were arrested following a search of their rented home at 4 Beechwood Avenue on Monday.

The pair face charges of possession of explosives with intent to endanger life and the possession of items for an act of terrorism including PETN high grade explosives and a deactivated Yugoslavian M56 machine gun and magazine. Mr. Concannon (39) is also accused of collecting material in October of last year likely to be of use to terrorists, specifically what the prosecution described as “detailed photographs of Merseyside Police Station”.

Bail was refused for Lesley Concannon by Derry Magistrate Barney McElholm on the grounds that she posed a flight risk. The mother-of-one broke down in court when bail was refused.

No bail application was made on behalf of Kevin Barry Concannon. The pair were remanded to appear again on June 27.(Full report in Sunday Journal)
