Welcoming the development, Independent Derry City & Strabane District Councillor Gary Donnelly said the laneways had been in a very dangerous state.

The move comes letters were issued by a different organisation asking local residents to agree to contribute towards the funding needed for a programme of maintenance for the laneways , which would have involved the laneways being cleaned out twice a year.

Colr Donnelly, who took part in the operation along with Independent Councillor Sean Carr, said that following concerns over this request for financial assistance from another party, volunteers from the Creggan Community Collective decided to step in and organise the work on behalf of the local community.

He said Creggan Community Collective managed to secure a loan of equipment such as litter pickers, from Derry & Strabane Council, while the Housing Executive supplied wheel barrows and wet weather gear.

Colr Donnelly said: “I want to welcome the work that has been undertaken and thank all those involved in helping with the clean up of this area.”

Colr Donnelly also thanked Transport NI for addressing concerns raised over wires exposed at a lamp post next to a school in Bligh’s Lane area earlier this week.

“I want to thank them for their swift action and I am calling for anyone who is interfering with this to stop it,” he said.
