A man who stole a till from a Waterside bar has been jailed for six months.
Damien Anthony McMahon, of Fern Park, pleaded guilty to burglary on April 23, 2013.
Derry Magistrates Court heard that a member of the public phoned police after he saw two men walking along Spencer Road holding a till.
The till, which was worth £1,000, was stolen from a function room in Iona House.
The court was told two men could be seen on CCTV pulling up the shutters to the function room, took the till and left the bar.
McMahon was identified from the CCTV footage and was arrested.
During police interview, the 25-year-old accepted he had stolen the till and said there was nothing in it.
The court heard the other man was actually a youth and he received a Juvenile Justice Order when he was sentenced in June.
Defence counsel Kyle Gribben said his client is ‘too familiar to the court’ and has a record.
He added McMahon had ‘something of a difficult upbringing’ and ‘alcohol and drug abuse is never far away from his life’.
Jailing the 25-year-old, District Judge Barney McElholm said ‘for someone of his age he has an appalling record.’
He said McMahon stole and expensive till and ‘effectively destroyed it leaving the owner at a loss, there is no chance of this defendant compensating him for it.
The judge added: ‘he will have to realise if he continues to offend he will continue to go to prison. It is time he took responsibilty for his own life and his own actions’.
