30-year-old accused of drugs offences released on bail to live in Barcelona

A 30-year-old man accused of drugs offences wept in court as he was granted permission to live and work in Barcelona.

Connor McGoldrick,of Mallory Park, Eglinton, is charged with being concerned in an offer to supply ecstasy and cocaine between January 1 and February 13.

He is further charged with being concerned in the supply of cannabis, possessing cocaine and ecstasy with intent to supply and simple possession of class A and B drugs.

An investigating officer told Derry Magistrates Court she believed she could connect the defendant to all the charges.

The court heard allegations that police seized a mobile phone in December 2015 as part of a drugs investigation.

A contact was stored under the name ‘Beavis’.

The court heard claims that police believe McGoldrick is this contact and suspect that he is involved in the supply of drugs.

In February, police observed the 30-year-old in premises where he was the DJ. He was arrested for drugs offences and his mobile phone was seized.

McGoldrick was released on police bail while his phone was examined by police.

Earlier this week, police conducted a search of a property and the defendant was present. It is alleged he was found to be in possession of a small bag of cannabis.

The investigating officer claimed police found a number of messages on McGoldrick’s phone which relate to drug supply.

During police interview, the 30-year-old allegedly admitted selling cocaine.

Police opposed bail for fear of further offences.

Defence solicitor Maeliosa Barr said his client, who suffers from Aspergers Syndrome, is due to move to Barcelona to start a new job.

He said McGoldrick has a passion is for music and he often DJ’s.

The solicitor said the 30-year-old is ‘vulnerable’ and was used by ‘older and wiser people who realised he was mixing with this circle and had access to people who would be interested in buying drugs.

Granting bail, District Judge Barney McElholm said the defendant ‘would be better going to Barcelona’.

He added he did not believe McGoldrick is a drug dealer but a ‘conduit’.

The judge excused the 30-year-old from attending court when the case is mentioned again on March 24
