A man who smeared faeces over two police cells has been jailed for four months.

John McGinley, of Bonds Hill, pleaded guilty to criminal damage on October 5.

Derry Magistrates Court heard the 43-year-old was in police custody because his licence has been revoked.

He was seen on CCTV taking off his clothes and ‘squatting’ before smearing excrement over the cell.

McGinley then shouted at civilian police employees if one of you come through the door you will get your nose broke’.

He than began to throw pillows and bedding around the cell.

McGinley had to be moved and he smeared faeces over the second cell.

The court was told specialist cleaners had to be called to clean both cells.

A defence solicitor told the court the 43-year-old has issues and at the time was in an emotional state.

He said McGinley had been in custody for some time when he caused the damage but it was accepted this was ‘deplorable behaviour’.
