53-year-old accused of assaulting paramedic

A 53-year-old man has appeared in court accused of assaulting a paramedic.

Joseph Harkin, of Harvey Street, is charged with assaulting an amulance worker on July 8.

The defendant initially pleaded guilty to the charge.

However, after the facts were read out to the court he claimed they were ‘all lies’.

It is alleged that Harkin went into the police station and asked to speak to police about something.

However, he was he was highly intoxicated and couldn’t remember what this was.

An ambulance was tasked after police noticed Harkin was bleeding profusely from a cut on his hand.

The 53-year-old was calm when he went into the ambulance.

He allegedly became aggressive a short time later and swung a punch at a paramedic and spat at him.

The defendant was remanded in custody to appear in court again via videolink on Monday.
