Accused of assaulting pregnant ex-girlfriend

A teenager accused of hitting his pregnant ex-girlfriend with a saucepan has been refused bail at the local magistrates court.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named because of his age, is charged with common assault, possessing an offensive weapon and making a threat to kill.

He is further charged with harassment, making a threat to damage property and resisting police. The charges relate to alleged incidents between December 1, last year and April 25.

Derry Magistrates Court heard allegations the teen hit his ex-girlfriend in the face with a saucepan and held a knife against her throat. He also allegedly made threats to kill her and her family.

The court heard allegations that the teenager shouted at the alleged injured party as she walked in the city centre, calling her a ‘f****** s***’ and that he made derogatory comments about her dead father in a phone call.

There are further allegations that in another phone call he told the alleged injured party she ‘won’t be preganant forever. Your body might be pregnant but your face isn’t. Is you face fireproof? Because I am coming to burn you out’.

The teen also allegedly contacted his ex-girlfriend by text and through social media sites and told her he would not let her keep the child.

Opposing bail, an investigating officer told the court the alleged offences were committed whilst the 17-year-old was on bail. He added that police fear the teen would commit further offences, not adhere to bail conditions or interfere with witnesses.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the court his client denies the offences and would have support from the Youth Justice Agency if released on bail.

Deputy District Judge Oonagh Mullan refused bail for fear of further offences. The teen will appear in court again via videolink on June 5.
