Accused of hijacking and causing grevious bodily harm

A 24-year-old Derry man has appeared in court accused of hijacking a car from a pensioner.

Joseph Patrick McMullan, whose address was given on court papers as no fixed abode, faces further charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, driving with excess alcohol, driving whilst disqualified and having no insurance.

The charges relate to an alleged incident in the Bonds Hill area of the Waterside on Monday.

At a special sitting of Derry Magistrates Court yesterday, McMullan spoke only to confirm he understood the charges.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said his client denies the offences but there would be no bail application at this time. McMullan was remanded in custody and will appear in court again via videolink on January 9.

A 21-year-old man who was also arrested during the incident has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
