A convicted sex offender has appeared in court accused of watching pornography in a public place and simulating sex with a mattress.
Martin Gregory Coll, of no fixed abode, is charged with committing an act of a lewd, obscene or disgusting nature outraging public decency.
He is further charged with indecent behaviour.
The charges relate to an alleged incident at Lavery Fold, Asylum Road, in the early hours of August 23.
Derry Magistrates Court heard allegations that a man was seen going into a courtyard of Lavery Fold - sheltered accommodation for older people - in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police who went to check why the man was there heard ‘sex sounds’ coming from behind a fence.
It was claimed officers saw Coll lying on a mattress with a small hand-held DVD player which was playing pornography.
The 52-year-old was allegedly naked from the waist down, with his trousers and underwear pulled around his ankles, and he was simulating sex with the mattress.
It was revealed to the court that Coll has 72 previous convictions on his criminal record.
Defence solicitor Deaglan Barrett told the court his client would not be applying for bail at this time as there was an issue with a suitable address.
The 52-year-old was remanded in custody and will appear in court later this week. Adjourning the bail application, District Judge Peter King said ‘notwithstanding your lack of address, given the nature and number of offences on your record it will be a difficult application in any event’.
