Appeal follows Derry hijacking attempt

Appeals have been made for members of the public to report two males involved in an attempted hijacking in Shantallow.

A woman was left badly shaken after the incident at Moyola Drive shortly before 10am on Saturday. A man approached the woman as she sat in a stationary car. He grabbed her arm and pulled her shouting at her to get out of the vehicle. When she refused to get out of the vehicle the male walked off towards a second male.

A police spokesperson said: “The female driver was not injured, however she was left badly shaken.” The hijacker was described as approximately 5’8”, clean shaven, with a local accent and was wearing a white hoody with a blue pattern on it. The second male was wearing dark clothing and a dark hoody.

Sinn Féin Councillor Tony Hassan condemned those behind the attempted hijacking. “This must have been a very frightening experience for this woman as it’s reported the hijacker attempted to pull her from the car and shouted abuse at her during the attack. It’s the last thing anyone would expect to happen at 10 o’clock on a Saturday morning. I would urge anyone with information about this incident to bring it forward to the police straight away.”
