A vicious attack on a woman in Creggan last night has been condemned.
The attack took place at a laneway which runs between Ballymagowan Avenue and Creggan Heights. The The 50-year-old grandmother was walking along the area around 9pm when a lone assailant, armed with a knife, attacked her.
A facebook post by the victim’s son said: “Just back from hospital with my mother who was jumped and attacked with a knife in the lane that runs down from Ballymagowan Avenue onto Creggan Heights. She was slashed across the head and face and her coat was slashed open to bits.”
The post also said the attacker was wearing fingerless gloves and “if anyone sees or hears anything at all or knows something please get in contact and also be extremely careful as this person is very dangerous. My mother is very lucky to escape with the injuries she has.”
Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey condemned the incident and said: “I was shocked and deeply disgusted to learn of this incredibly vicious attack on a woman in the Creggan area of the city last night.
“The woman was using a local laneway when she was attacked and has sustained cuts to her face and head. This was a terrifying and savage assault that has had a profound impact on the victim and her family.
“This is a laneway often used by local people, and especially children. The person behind the attack is a brutal thug who has no regard for the person he hurt nor for this community.
