A Derry man who was stabbed nine times in the face with a broken glass while protecting a young woman, has been given a bravery award.
Ricki Grieve sustained serious injuries in the attack which took place in Aldershot last month.
The local man has now been chosen to receive the Chris Donovan Trust Bravery Award for 2015.
The Trust which gives awards to deserving people was set up in England by a couple whose son was beaten to death. This is the first time anyone has been given a bravery award.
“We can’t think of anyone more deserving than Ricki,” said Ray Donovan.
Ricki Grieve said: “It is an honour to receive this award. Ray and Vi Donovan suffered a horrible loss losing their son to a street fight, Ray had told me how they had sympathised with the situation I ended up in, it’s incredible how strong they have been through that loss to set up awards to keep his memory. I’d like to thank Daniel O’Brien for nominating me. Thanks to everyone in the Derry/Londonderry community for all the kind words and support they have shown.”
