A 24 year-old man who has been banned from every shop and shopping centre in Northern Ireland told police he ‘can’t stop himself from stealing’.

Declan Kinsella, of Clooney Mews, appeared in court on foot of four arrest warrants.

He is further charged with the criminal damage to an electronic tag.

An investigating officer told Derry Magistrates Court Kinsella had claims he ‘can’t stop himself from stealing’ and continued to offend by damaging the electronic tracking tag.

The officer said that Kinsella has nine previous convictions for theft and is not a suitable candidate for bail due to his history of not showing up for court appearances.

Defence solicitor Keith Kyle told the court his client missed a court appearance because he was on placement in Marks & Spencer with the Prince’s Trust scheme.

District Judge Barney McElholm refused bail and Kinsella was remanded in custody until September 11.
