Car rammed, arrests, alert at Northland Road

It’s thought that the two men arrested after a car was rammed on the Northland Road in Derry tonight may be known dissident republicans.

Reports from the scene suggest that revolvers may have been found during the incident, which happened shortly after eight o’ clock near the entrance to First Source.

It’s understood that army bomb experts are expected at the scene, which has been cordoned off.

One eyewitness said he saw one of the men being handcuffed by police and put into a white suit before being taken away. Officers then removed items from the car.

The scene remains cordoned off and traffic diversions are in place between Seagate and Springtown Road.

SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey said it was welcome news that the police appeared to have foiled an attack in the city.

There have been reports of ‘ongoing public disorder’ in the Bogside area. Motorists have been advised to avoid Lecky Road, Rossville Street and Barrack Street. A short time ago around one hundred young people, some wearing masks, were gathered outside the Bogside Inn. A fire was burning on the road at the bottom of the flyover.

There are reports of helicopter activity in the Creggan area.
