A community service report has been ordered on a Carndonagh women who was caught with cannabis.
Brigid McLaughlin, 37 Abbott’s Wood, appeared at Carndonagh District Court on Tuesday,
Inishowen Garda Inspector David Murphy said that at 4.45am on July 5th, 2024, Gardai were on Station Road, Carndonagh when they observed a BMW being driven at speed.
They stopped it at Woodside and the vehicle pulled over immediately. McLaughlin was the sole occupant and Gardai detected a strong smell of cannabis coming from the car. A search of the vehicle yielded a medicine bottle, which had been in a handbag in the passenger seat. It contained a herbal substance which McLaughlin admitted was cannabis. The court was told it had a value of 16 euro.
McLaughlin has previous drugs convictions include misuse of drugs for which she was given a 12 month probation bond in 2013.
Defence solicitor Ciaran MacLochlainn said his client was 43 and had four children. He said she has a problem with drugs and is attending counselling and treatment.
He said she worked part-time and receives family income supplement.
Judge Paul Kelly sought community and probation reports and adjoined the case until June 11th.
He noted that if McLaughlin was in “dire financial circumstances,” she “might be better not spending her money in drugs.”
