Robert Anthony Tosh applied to have his bail conditions varied to allow him to travel to France for the football tournament which starts on Friday.

Tosh, of Margaret Street, is charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent on February 1.

The defendant is one of two men charged in connection with the alleged assault.

Opposing the bail variation, an investigating officer said police had concerns about Tosh leaving the country as they would be unable to enforce bail conditions in France.

The officer also told the court the alleged ‘violent attack’ was fuelled by alcohol.

She said police have concerns Tosh would consume alcohol, which would make him ‘volatile’ and may lead to further offences.

The officer added that the defendant has not provided any evidence he had tickets booked to fly to France or to attend any matches.

A defence solicitor told the court his client denied that he had consumed any more than one pint of beer on the night of the alleged incident.

He added that Tosh was planning to go to Euro 2016 with friends and they had booked the tickets. The solicitor said proof of this could be provided to the court later this week.

Deputy District Judge Noel Dunlop refused the application given the nature of the offences.
