Derry City FC star Rory Patterson has been given a suspended sentence for biting a man in the face in a city centre assault.

29 year-old Patterson of Oakfield Mews, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm following an incident outside a bar on Shipquay Street on December 12 last year.

Derry Magistrate’s Court was shown footage of the incident during the hearing.

The court heard that a row broke out between Patterson and the victim outside the bar and a defence barrister said the injured party had made comments about his client’s profession.

Sentencing Patterson, Deputy District Judge John Connolly described the assault as a “nasty incident.”

“The injured party is left with a scar on his face. It seems to be a case of when the drink was in the wit was out,” he said.

The footballer, who has represented Northern Ireland on a number of occasions, was sentenced to nine months imprisonment suspended for two years and ordered to pay £1,000 compensation to the victim.
