A man accused of raping a woman in the Glenabbey area has been refused bail.

Aaron Francis Hyland, whose address was given on court papers as Cranbrook Court, Belfast, is charged with raping a 23-year-old woman on October 3.

He faces further charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon and making a threat to kill.

The 20-year-old is also charged with assaulting police and possession of a class B drug.

He is also charged with disorderly behaviour, criminal damage and resisting police in relation to a separate incident.

Derry Magistrates Court heard the complainant sustained massive internal injuries in the alleged incident.

Police opposed bail for fear of further offences and fear for Hylands safety.

An investigating officer said police are aware of a threat against the 20-year-old and ‘certain people would be delighted if this man received bail to get their hands on him’.

District Judge Barney McElholm refused bail and Hyland was remanded in custody until December 10.
