A man who stole four football jerseys was arrested when he returned to the same store a short time later Derry Magistrate’s Court heard this week.

Anthony Sheerin (36) of 61, Leenan Gardens in Derry admitted stealing the football jerseys valued at £240 from a shop in the Richmond Centre.

The court heard that police were called after reports of the theft of the jerseys.

Meanwhile Sheerin had returned to the store but was recognised due to CCTV footage.

He ran up the down escalator but was arrested as he was leaving the shop.

Defence solicitor Mr. Kevin Casey said his client had ‘struggled with addictions’.

Sheerin was sentenced to 8 months in prison suspended for two years.

He was also ordered to pay £240 in compensation and District Judge Barney McElholm said he had ten weeks to pay it as he wanted to drive home to Sheerin a lesson.
