The jury in a rape trial at Derry Crown Court has been discharged for legal reasons.

Patrick McNamara, originally from County Kerry, was facing three charges of rape of a 46-year-old woman.

He was also facing further charges of attempted rape, false imprisonment, indecent assault and assault.

The offences are alleged to have occurred on September 9, 2008, at McNamara’s then home in the Ardanlee area of Culmore.

He denies all the charges.

But this morning (Wednesday) Judge Piers Grant discharged the jury. He said an essential witness was out of the country and not available to give evidence.
