An 18 years-old Derry man needed six stitches in his nose after he was assaulted in a park in Letterkenny earlier this month.

The man, who asked not to be named, said he wanted to warn people about a group of young people who set upon him and his friends while they were on the swings.

The incident occurred at a park near the town’s hospital on August 15, between 8 and 9 p.m.

“At first they started calling us s**** and s****,” the man said.

“Another guy came down with his top off telling us he was the biggest fighter in Ireland.

“We had done nothing at all to provoke this, we didn’t say a thing.”

The man says he was thumped in the mouth by one of the gang, who he believed to be 14 years of age.

“They said they would get me so I just legged it,” he added.

“I ran away as I did I saw my sister’s friend on the ground with people standing on her head.”

He said he escaped to a local centre but was followed by one of the gang who came in and attacked him, breaking his nose.

“My nose still hasn’t stopped bleeding,” he said. “We just couldn’t believe that something like this could happen in broad daylight. We did nothing to deserve this. I just want people to know that his park is dangerous at night.”

A spokesperson for Letterkenny Garda confirmed that an 18 year-old had been assaulted and they were continuing to investigate the incident.
