Disorderly at 11th night bonfire

Philip Jackson, of The Fountain, pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour on July 11.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard police were on the city walls when they saw the 26-year-old shouting at members of the public.

He was sitting on the steps of the old fire station with a half empty bottle of Buckfast and a box containing 18 beers.

Jackson was shouting ‘all taigs are targets; all cops are targets. Hi you c*** who are you?’

Officers advised the defendant he could not consume alcohol in a public area.

However, Jackson told the police ‘f*** off I am not listening to you’.

The 26-year-old was escorted away from the bonfire towards Artillery Street.

Jackson said ‘the Fenians are over there and you can arrest them b******* at their bonfire.’

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said his client had 18 beers and a bottle of Buckfast at a bonfire.

He added: ‘Nothing good ever comes from bonfires’.

Mr Quigley told the court his client has managed to avoid offending for the last seven years which ‘suggested he had wised up’.

The solicitor said it was accepted on this night Jackson was ‘extremely obnoxious.’

District Judge Barney McElholm fined the defendant £125 and imposed an offender levy of £15.
