A Dungiven man who was caught drink driving was three times over the limit.

Gerard Joseph Kelly, of O’Cahan Place in the town, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol on April 7.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard the 62-year-old was driving slowly along the Victoria Road.

He went over the dividing lines of the road a number of times, causing oncoming vehicles to swerve to avoid hitting his vehicle.

Police stopped Kelly and he failed a preliminary breath test.

An evidential sample was then taken which gave a reading of 104mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

A defence solicitor told the court there had been a family bereavement at the time.

He said Kelly had consumed alcohol but had a sleep and ‘thought he was okay to drive’.

Deputy District Judge Oonagh Mullan disqualified the 62-year-old from driving for 18 months.

She said the reading was ‘high’ and fined him £300.
