A masked man armed with a hammer caused damage to a door, a court has heard.

Joseph McCallion, of Strand Foyer, pleaded guilty to criminal damage on June 26, last year.

Derry Magistrates Court heard the 18-year-old went to a house in Florence Street and banged on the door.

He was wearing a balaclava, armed with the hammer and shouting ‘let me f****** in’.

The homeowner made an emergency call to police and McCallion was arrested a short distance away.

Almost £100 worth of damage was caused to the door during the incident.

It was revealed the injured party’s son owed money to the defendant and he wanted to collect it.

Defence solicitor Maeliosa Barr told the court McCallion has remained friends with the injured party’s son despite what happened.

He added the teen committed the offences with ‘alcohol on board’ and said the 18-year-old has issues with alcohol.

Fining McCallion £150, District Judge Barney McElholm said ‘he would do well not to show his face in here for some time. The next time it will be an immediate custodial sentence’.

The judge also ordered the 18-year-old to pay £97 compensation to the injured party.
