Firefighters in Derry last night managed to contain a fire at a primary school in the Waterside.
The fire broke out at Good Shepherd Primary school at Dungiven Road in Derry.
The blaze began in outbuildings at the rear of the premises but then spread to the main building.
An evaluation on the extent of the damage will be carried out later.
Fire Group Commander, Colm McGuigan said the Northern Ireland Fire and rescue Service was started deliberately.
The PSNI will now launch an investigation into the incident in an attempt to track down those responsible.
Waterside Sinn Fein councillor Christopher Jackson condemned those responsible.
“It’s very worrying that this fire has taken place just a few weeks before the new school term starts.
“I visited the scene tonight and I would like to commend the work of the Fire Service who dealt with this fire and would appeal to anyone in the community who has any information on how this fire started to bring it forward to the investigations team.”
