Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hOisín has claimed Sinn Féin Councillor Sean McGlinchey, volunteered himself for questioning with police prior to his arrest.
Colr. McGlinchey was arrested at his home in Dungiven on Tuesday by detectives from Serious Crime Branch investigating paramilitary activity in the Dungiven area.
The former mayor of Limavady has been taken to Antrim Serious Crime Suite.
Mr Ó hOisín, MLA for east Derry, said: “I am disappointed that the PSNI have chosen once again to mount a high-profile arrest operation of a local councillor.
“Sean McGlinchey’s solicitor contacted the PSNI stating that his client would present himself voluntarily to answer any questions following the arrest of another Sinn Féin councillor last week on the most spurious of grounds.
“Sinn Féin will be raising these arrests with the Police Ombudsman and the Policing Board.”
