Fought with man on road, called officers ‘scumbags’

A 29-year-old who assaulted a man and was abusive to police has received a suspended jail term.

Gary Campbell, of Northland Road, pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour on April 20.

Derry Magistrates Court heard that police were on patrol in the Creggan area when they saw Campbell fighting with another man in the middle of the road.

Campbell began shouting at the police officers, calling them “f***** scumbags, you’re nothing but f****** scumbags, you all need shot”. He was arrested and during interview he claimed he had a lot of hatred for the police and that was why he acted the way he did.

Campbell got a four month jail term suspended for two years. He was also fined £200 by District Judge Barney McElholm.
