The PSNI in Derry have arrested a Raphoe man who escaped from prison in the Republic yesterday.

The arrest happened in Shantallow at around 11.15am today (Fri).

Martin McDermott (26) escaped from the low-security Loughan House prison near Blacklion in County Cavan. He

was serving a seven-year sentence last July for the manslaughter of 24 year-old Garda Gary McLoughlin. The garda died after McDermott drove at high speed into his patrol car at Burt in 2009. Another garda was seriously injured.

After McDermott’s escape was spotted yesterday at 5pm, a major cross-border search was launched. There was speculation that McDermott might have crossed the border, and that he had links to Derry.

The Department of Justice is seeking a full report into how he escaped. Senior gardai have expressed shock that he was being held in a low security prison.

When he was jailed last summer, McDermott also admitted charges of dangerous driving causing death, drink-driving, driving without insurance and driving while disqualified.
