Hijacking attempt in Waterside

Describing what happened, PSNI Constable Millar said: “It was reported that at around 12.20am a number of cars were stopped by a group of youths on the Ardmore Road near the Tullyally Road in an attempt to hijack them.

“One of the youths was reported to be carrying a baseball bat.

“I am appealing for anyone with information who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area or have information about the incident to contact police at Strand Road on 101 quoting reference 20 4/8/16. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

On a separate matter, the PSNI in Derry have also appealed for those working in local businesses to be on the alert for counterfeit notes circulating in the city.

A spokesman said: “We are getting reports of counterfeit notes circulating in the city and if staff members don’t know what to look for then it’s your bottom line that will suffer.”

Police have advised staff to check whether the main printing feel raised and whether they can see a bold and clear watermark when the note is held up to the light.

Other tell-tale signs can include the note feeling limp, waxy or shiny, ill-defined or blurred print, or colouring which seems off.

Businesses are also advised that the local branch of the PSNI will have copies of the ‘Know your bank notes’ leaflet.
