Homeless man smashed window in mother’s house

A homeless man who broke a window in his mother’s house to get some food has been given a conditional discharge.

David Murray, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to criminal damage on May 25.

Derry Magistrates Court heard the 20-year-old broke a window of his mother’s flat in the Sandale Park area of the city.

When police arrived he told officers he had ‘broken into his mother’s house to keep warm’.

Murray’s mother reported to police that he did not have permission to be in the flat and had caused £80 worth of damage.

Defence solicitor Eugene Burns told the court his client was homeless and had no money.

He said the 20-year-old, who has no previous criminal record, hadn’t been eating and went to his mother’s to get some food.

Deputy District Judge Christopher Holmes imposed a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered Murray to pay £80 compensation.
