Jailed for seven months for assault

A 23-year-old who head butted a woman and lashed out at police has been jailed for seven months.

Josie McCaughey, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to three charges of common assault, assaulting police and criminal damage.

She also admitted resisting and obstructing police.

The offences were committed between October 4 and December 22, last year.

Derry Magistrates Court heard that McCaughey walked up to the injured party in Waterloo Street and head butted her,

Two weeks later in the dole office the 23-year-old saw the injured party again and said ‘see you, you Gypsy b******, I will head butt you again’.

The injured party then reported both incidents to police and McCaughey was arrested.

A police interview with the 23-year-old had to be suspended when she lashed out at the officers.

The court heard McCaughey threw paperwork off the table and made further threats towards the injured party. She told police the woman had ‘another hiding coming’ and threatened to ‘slice her f****** throat’.

In December, McCaughey assaulted another woman as she walked past a city centre bar by throwing a drink over her.

The 23-year-old was arrested and she kicked a police officer twice on the leg. She also spat in the face of a second officer.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman told the court his client ‘binge drinks on occasion and that is when she gets into trouble’.
