Jailed for ‘slashing’ man in the arm

A 21-year-old who ‘slashed’ a man in the arm with a broken bottle has been jailed for eight months.

Marc Villa, of John Street, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

He also admitted stealing nappies from a supermarket on June 22.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard Villa and his girlfriend left Tesco after he stole a packet of nappies.

They saw the injured party, Villa’s girlfriend’s ex partner, and they began shouting at him.

The court heard Villa told the injured party ‘watch yourself I know where you live’.

He clenched his fists and hit the man.

Both men ended up in a scuffle on the ground.

Villa then went behind a billboard, lifted a broken bottle and smashed it.

He chased the injured party and struck out towards his neck.

The man lifted his arm to protect himself and he was ‘slashed’ in the arm.

He ran into a local bar and paramedics were called. No details were given about the extent of the injury caused.

Defence counsel Steven Mooney told the court there was a history between these two men.

However, he said Villa accepts this is a ‘very serious offence’ and he knows he is going to prison.

Mr Mooney added his client would like to ‘apologise to the victim, the court and all other victims of his offending’.
