Jailed for stealing Christmas lights

A 20-year-old man who stole £75 worth of Christmas lights has been jailed for three months.

Kelvin James Kane, of Jefferson Court, pleaded guilty to theft of lights from B & M Bargains on December 11, last year.

He also admitted a charge of burlary with intent to steal in relation to an incident at a city centre shop in November.

Derry Magistrates Court heard that Kane went into B & M Bargains with a plastic bag, filled it with Christmas lights and made off without paying.

He was identified after police officers viewed CCTV footage of the incident.

Shortly after midnight on November 5, Kane entered the front door of a shop in Shipquay Street.
The shutters weren’t pulled down properly and the doors were left open.

The 20-year-old went into the shop and stole a bottle of coke worth £1.

A defence solicitor accepted his client has a ‘bad record for dishonesty offences’ and steals to fund his substance abuse.

He said the 20-year-old’s offending ‘has brought him to the attention of certain elements in this city’ and he intends to move away from Derry upon release.
