A woman who glassed a “peacemaker” in the face has been sentenced to two and a half years.

Gemma Marie Doyle, of 32 Malin Gardens pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause gbh on June 19, last year.

Derry Crown Court heard 22-year-old Doyle was having an argument with her cousin when the injured party acted as a “peacemaker” to stop a fight.

Doyle had an empty pint glass in her hand and hit the woman, who was celebrating her birthday, in the face with it.

She was left with “significant injuries” to her top lip and required ten internal stitches and between 16 and 20 external stitches.

Passing sentence Judge Piers Grant said he had viewed the scars and while it is important to reassure the woman she “presents as a very attractive young woman” the scarring is visible despite the “disguise of make-up.”

Passing sentence the judge said glassing cases are “regarded as very serious” and a custodial sentence will be imposed.

Doyle will serve 15 months of her sentence in custody and a further 15mths licence.
