The charges relate to an alleged incident in the 59-year-old’s home on August 9.

Derry Magistrate’s Court heard McGrotty had previously been granted bail to reside with his brother but the address was then withdrawn.

The court heard allegations that on the night of the alleged incident, McGrotty was consuming alcohol in his home with the two complainants and another person.

It is alleged he went into the kitchen and when he returned he was wearing a crash helmet.

McGrotty allegedly assualted the two men with nunchucks. He also alleged that they assaulted him.

Opposing the bail application, an investigating officer said all three men associate with each other and consume alcohol together.

He added that the witness lives in the same area as the 59-year-old.

The officer said police fear the defendant will commit further offences or interfere with witnesses.

Defence counsel Catherine Devlin said there is no other address available to her client. She added McGrotty is ‘desperate’ to get out of prison as this is the first time he has spent any time in custody.

District Judge Peter King released the 59-year-old with a number of conditions to reside at his own address.
