A man who treated a ‘vulnerable’ teenage girl as a ‘plaything’ has been jailed for 12 years.

The 44-year-old, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his victim, pleaded guilty to eight charges of indecent assault, two of gross indecency and making a threat to damage property.

He also admitted eight charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

All the offences were committed between January 2006 and December 2009. The abuse began when the victim, who was referred to in court by the initial X was just 15-years-old.

Jailing the man at Derry Crown Court today, Judge Philip Babington said it was a ‘shocking case’.

“The defendant for some three and a half years used ‘X’ as he wanted in a depraved and humiliating way without any concern for her.

“She was treated sexually as his own personal play thing and subjected to gratuitous violence of the very worst type”.

Following his release from prison the defendant will be subject to licence and was ordered to sign the sex offenders register indefinitely.

He will also be subject to a sexual offences prevention order. This bans him from having any contact with his victim.

The 44-year-old is also banned from having any unauthorised contact with children and from forming a relationship with a female without disclosing his convictions.
