Man accused of assaulting friend

A 50-year-old man has appeared in court accused of assaulting a friend with a glass bottle.

Michael McCann, of Celandine Court, is charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, possessing an offensive weapon and threat to kill.

The charges relate to an alleged incident on November 29.

Derry Magistrates Court heard allegations that the injured party sustained ‘severe injuries’ to her head including cuts and bruises.

It is alleged McCann assaulted her with a glass bottle.

Police opposed bail because the defendant lives too close to the alleged injured party. However, they accepted he has no previous convictions.

District Judge Peter King released the 50-year-old on his own bail of £500 with a surety of £500. He is to reside in Violet Street and ordered to abide by a curfew.

McCann is also banned from being drunk in a public and from contacting the alleged injured party. He will appear in court again on December 18.
