A man has admitted an assault in which the victim lost part of his ear.
Brian William Maxwell, of Fern Park, had denied causing grievous bodily harm with intent in May 2010.
However, on the morning of his trial the 31-year-old applied to be re-arraigned and pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of grievous bodily harm.
The victim, a man in his 20s, had part of his left ear bitten off during the assault.
Defence counsel Joe Brolly told Derry Crown Court his client has ‘already apologised to the victim and wants to make that apology public’. He added that there is ‘no ill will’ between the men.
Sentencing was adjourned for probation reports and victim impact reports to be compiled.
Judge Philip Babington said ‘unfortunately these type of cases are too common’ and there is a ‘significant risk’ of a custodial sentence. Maxwell will appear in court in January.
